Credit crunching: Rip your own jeans

The look that started it all: Balmain.

The ripped jean couldn’t have come back at a more perfect time. It’s the most budget-friendly item imaginable; high-end department stores sell them for as much as $300 but you can easily replicate the look with an old pair in your closet at home. Not to mention distressed denim fits in nicely with today’s rocker chic moment spear-headed by fashion brands such as Balmain and Alexander Wang. Here’s how you can make your own.

1) Choose a pair of vintage or well-worn jeans. Pick strategic areas on the denim that you want to look worn. Scrape designated areas with a pumice stone or cheese grater until you achieve the desired look.

2) Using a large, sharp knife, slice ares of the distressed fabric that you’d like to look ripped (using scissors will yield a look that screams, “I just spent two hours cutting up my jeans.”) Grab a rough pumice stone or sandpaper and rub the area around the cut fabric in order to soften the edges.

3) Wearing rubber gloves, dip a sponge into a bucket of bleach and water. Next, lightly sponge areas you want to look slightly discolored. Note: this works best on denim that is already a light blue wash. Otherwise, your jeans will look like a bad 1980s music video castoff. Afterwards, toss in washing machine and, voilá, you’ve got a pair of distressed jeans.

I find ripped jeans to be impossibly hard to do at home and at the same time I don’t want to spend loads of money for a pair. Do you know of any services that will distress jeans for you? I heard that Current Elliott does this.
