MFW: Dolce & Gabbana's emotional momentAudience members were in tears at the end of Sunday’s Dolce & Gabbana show, which returned to the house’s roots by focusing on tailoring, fit and romantic Sicilian dressing. The collection began with precisely cut jackets before segueing into civilized suits interspersed with Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce’s familiar steamy corsets. Pretty lace and rich velvet dresses in black, burgundy, emerald green and red and floaty floral frocks took over from there. It was beautiful in a bittersweet, almost elegiac way: a video of the 25-year-old house’s atelier workers projected on the runway backdrop closed the show. I literally had goosebumps. A soundtrack of the Moulin Rouge ballad “Come What May” didn’t exactly help curb all of the emotion swelling up in the room. As Milan’s clothing industry worries about the future of its fashion week, the tribute served as an especially poignant reminder of why this city’s craftsmanship deserves a proper showcase. |
